212 incidents of hate speech in 2020 came from social media, according to a new report.
The Irish Network Against Racism found a record number of complaints of racism on its iReport system last year. The iReport system received 700 complaints of racism last year, which is up 25 percent on 2019.
Just under half of the complaints were related to hate speech. Head of the Religions Department in UCC, Amanullah De Sondy, says the report is shocking and deeply concerning.
Also among the 700 reports, 159 were related to crime. 51 racial assaults were reported, along with 44 cases of graffiti - while property damage was reported 31 times.
There were also 99 reports of discrimination, with nearly 80 percent of those related to access to goods and services.
