The manager of a regional money advice service says that anyone in debt should not try and face it alone.
His comments come after a listener to the Joe Finnegan show told her story of having debt, in excess of 100-thousand euro, sold to a vulture fund.
The fund is now threatening to sell Anne-Marie's house if the debt is not settled.
Karl Cronin, manager of the North Connaught & Ulster Money and Advice Service, says that MABS has protocols in place to help people in the same situation and they should consider attending the free service for advice.
"Debt is a very lonely place to be in and it often falls to one person in the household to deal with it. I would encourage Anne-Marie and indeed anyone else in that position to reach out to us, so we can meet with them, let them know what their options are, look at the entire financial picture, and go from there. Perseverance and persistence pays and certainly from MABS perspective we have reached very agreeable solutions with the credit services for the benefit of our clients".
