The development of reliable and affordable school transport in rural Ireland is the key to encouraging sustainable travel habits in the public.
That's according to Roscommon/Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice who says people will not buy into the call to switch to public transport unless there is a change in mindset.
The Independent TD believes the Government is missing the opportunity to encourage younger people to use more sustainable transport methods .
Deputy Fitzmaurice says that students must become used to the idea of public transport instead of taking personal cars everywhere.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, he says Minister Ryan must insure the transport routes are there for the students to use.
If we want to show that we are interested in public transport.
Bare in mind inf you talk about public transport or anything you do, you start them young.
The school transport system is the first place we should start, every child whether the mammy or daddy is a millionaire or has damn all.
If you want to start showing the way forward. Instead we're walking by it on the low hanging fruit.
