There's relief among farmers and residents in the Lough Funshinagh area of south county Roscommon today with the announcement that a permanent solution is to be provided to alleviate flooding.
Roscommon County Council Chief Executive Eugene Cummins has received the support of the Minister at the Office of Public Works to install a pipe to drain water from the former turlough.
It has destroyed acres of farmland and has also caused one family to leave their home and up to eight other residences are only now protected with continuous pumping,
Recent reports when Hydrological Update suggest there would be further rising of waters this winter and homes and roads would be flooded if emergency action is not taken.
The pipe, which will extend from the lake to a river that joins the Shannon will be constructed this summer.
