It's hoped that renovation works at Athlone Garda station will be completed before the end of March.
The first phase of the project was the refurbishment of the former social welfare offices adjacent to the Garda barracks which was completed in June of 2019 - but Covid significantly slowed progress last year.
The Westmeath Joint Policing Meeting this month was told that the project has been described as "essential" and builders will remain on site for the remainder of the Level 5 five lockdown.
Westmeath Garda Chief Superintendent Fergus Healy explained that the project is still on schedule and it is hoped that the building will be complete by the end of February or early March.
When the works are complete at the Barracks it will double the space available previously to Gardai stationed in Athlone.
