An Investigation report published in recent days shows a 33-year-old inmate who died in Castlerea Prison received medical attention within 7 minutes after he appeared unconscious.
The incident happened in Castlerea Prison on Friday the 24 of July 2020.
Mr. G had no health issues when he was admitted to Castlerea Prison on November 2019.
But he had disclosed he was a heavy smoker.
According to Mr. G's cellmate, he complained of feeling out of breath and unwell shortly after dinner on Friday the 24th of July 2020.
During the next 25 minutes, he began vomiting and became unconscious.
CCTV footage shows an emergency call was made at 4:57pm.
A prison officer responded within seconds, and Nurse Officers received notification of the emergency within three minutes.
A Chief Nurse Officer began CPR on Mr. G four minutes after the cell door was unlocked and his vital signs were checked.
As his vital signs indicated that he had died, the resuscitation attempt was stopped at 5.10pm.
According to the report, no doctor could be contacted to formally pronounce Mr G dead.
The recommendations from the Officer of Inspector of Prisons said that Castlerea Prison should review the availability of a doctor for unexpected emergencies, access to all cells, and a protocol for reducing emergency access times
