Residents in estates in the Coosan, Cornamagh and Clonbrusk area of Athlone are considering the next step following the decision by Bord Pleanala to grant permission for a 426 home development.
Castlestar (Athlone) Ltd. lodged its application directly with the Bord through the Strategic Housing Development stream, which bypasses the normal local authority process.
The development is for 237 houses and 189 apartments built on a 15 hectare site with a 430 metre new road linking Coosan and Cornamaddy.
Over 70 submissions had been made on the plans with many residents citing concerns about the traffic congestion, the size of the development and its design.
While the Bord did attach a number of conditions it’s finding was that the proposal “would not seriously injure the residential or visual amenities of the area, or property in the vicinity”.
Éibhín Griffith who had made a submission on the plans says people in the area will need time to consider what to do.
