There's been a significant increase in the number of public order and drunkenness offences detected across Leitrim in the last year.
However, a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee today heard driving while intoxicated offences were becoming less common.
Figures presented by Chief Superintendent Aidan Glackin at the Leitrim JPC meeting today revealed a rise in certain types of crimes across the county.
Public order incidents grew from 64 to 102 in the space of 12 months while drunkenness offences rose from just 25 in 2021 to 56 in 2022.
Gardai say this is in part due to the return of the night time economy following the Covid pandemic.
However, driving under the influence of alcohol saw a decrease of 15 percent in the past year.
Over 470 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints have been carried out across the county so far this year with 29 detections, a decrease of five in the last year.
Elsewhere assault causing harm grew by 44 per cent with 26 cases recorded in the county so far this year, however sexual assault offences saw a decrease from 27 in 2021 to 19 in 2022.
Chief Superintendent Glackin also informed the meeting that Leitrim Gardai are working alongside the joint agency taskforce including the PSNI to tackle crime levels in the region.
