Rise in workplace deaths recorded in Shannonside region

The report, which was published yesterday, also shows a slight rise in workplace deaths, from 1.1 per 100,000 in 2022 to 1.6 per 100,000 last year.

Seven per cent of all workplace fatalities in 2023 occurred in the Shannonside region, according to the Health and Safety Authority's annual report.

83 investigations were undertaken into fatal accidents in 2023, of which 43 were deemed work-related.

There were two such deaths in County Leitrim, both of which occurred in the agriculture sector.
There was one workplace death in Roscommon in 2023 and no such deaths reported in County Longford.
Of the 43 deaths reported, the 72% occurred in the agriculture, fishing and forestry (20 deaths) and construction (11 deaths) sectors.
