Carrick on Shannon's new Rapid River Response Unit will hold an information and training event in the town this evening.
The group was set up this year following a major search operation in the Shannon River over Christmas.
The Rapid River Responders aim to improve the survival rate for people who enter the water so that emergency services can rescue them successfully.
They are providing instruction and equipment to volunteers, who will aid those in distress from the shore, with 23 members already trained.
The information evening is being held this evening at the Landmark Hotel from 7.30pm.
Chairperson of the group Sharon Garland says they are looking for volunteers for a range of tasks, both big and small.
'Really what we want to try and so is that people can be kept afloat in the water so that when the emergency services arrive the people that are trained and properly equipped to go into the water to rescue people.
That a person has somebody to rescue them and we are not searching for remains if you like.
We are also looking for a huge amount of other volunteers as we need to keep track of the training and we need a lot of help with administrating and we need people to come on board and help us do social media, websites and fundraising ideas.'
