A river safety demonstration is planned to take place in Athlone over the St Patrick's Day weekend. The traditional event on Saturday showcases the work of the Athlone Subaqua Club, Athlone River Safety Awareness, local Gardaí and the RNLI. The event is designed to highlight the lifesaving equipment which the rescue organisations have at their disposal.
The RNLI respond to vessels and people in distress in the water, while Athlone Sub-Aqua play an important role in search and recovery of the river. Athlone River Safety Awareness also work to raise awareness of the use of water safety equipment along the river. The free event will take place at the back of Athlone Castle on Saturday at 1pm. Spectators will also have the opportunity to see and use some of the safety equipment on the day.
