The Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management says it has 160 thousand tons of salt in stock to grit roads.

The Council says the programme is already at capacity.

Roscommon County Council has decided to make an exception for the old N5 near Ballaghaderreen, where the limit will stay at 80.

CISs, which are for local roads or cul de sacs, involve the community paying 10 per cent of the cost and the state paying the rest.

The default limit will drop from 80 kilometres an hour to 60 in November, unless special speed limits are adopted by the council.

The funding is for roads damaged by persistent rainfall over the winter and spring months.

The offences include one person travelling at 209 kilometres an hour in a 100 kilometre zone in County Cavan, and another driving at 147 kilometres an hour in a 60 kilometre zone in Dublin.

Roscommon received the highest amount in the region with almost 73 million euro.
