It's hoped that a new water robot will help transform water recovery to water rescue operations in Athlone.
Athlone River Safety Awareness has begun training local gardai, the Athlone sub aqua unit and other first responders in the use of a floatation device that can be driven via remote control to a person in the water.
It's seeking more volunteers to use the robot which is the first of its kind in Ireland - along with other lifesaving equipment which are all stored in easily accessible waterside yellow rescue boxes.
Chair of Athlone River Safety Awarenss Aengus O' Rourke explains how it works.
