The role of women in the fight for Irish freedom will be highlighted at a special book launch in Leitrim this evening.
'Underneath an Irish Sky' is a novel from well known Author Nicola Kearns and chronicles the journey of a local woman from her home county to major events in the struggle for Irish Independence.
The book has be written using historical accounts of real women who were part of the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War.
One inspiration for the book is Leitrim woman Bridie Clyne, who was a passionate member of Cumann na mBan in Dublin, and who broke through Pro treaty barricades in an ambulance during the Civil War to bring supplies and aid to Anti Treaty Forces being shelled in the Four Courts.
The book will be launched at McGirls Pub in Ballinamore this evening from 7 o'clock.
Bridie's son Proinsias O'Rathaille says it's vital that the contributions of these heroic women are recognised:
