The Roscommon and District League side just failed to advance to the quarter- finals of the Oscar Traynor Cup.
That’s despite beating the Mayo League 2–1 at Lecarrow on Sunday, failing to advance on goal difference. They were beaten away to the Galway League and only drew at home to the Sligo/Leitrim League.
Playing against the wind in the first-half, the hosts defended well with Conor McGreal, Keith Murphy, Rian Carpenter and Jack Higgins all playing well.
The game was scoreless at half-time and it was looking good for a home win.
Simon Leonard, Cathal Horan and Paul Mee dominated the middle of the field in the second-half.
It was no surprise when Rian Carpenter volleyed past the Mayo keeper 21 minutes into the second-half. Seven minutes later it was 2–0 for the Roscommon and District League.
Adam Farrell set Cian Kelly free on the right wing. Who, beat two defenders before planting the ball in the corner of the Mayo net.
However, some fortune went in Mayo’s direction as the referee played advantage when a Mayo player was fouled. Despite Mayo having two shots at goal, play was brought back and a free was awarded.
Jason Hunt converted the free-kick and with it ended the hopes of a good Roscommon and Districted league side.
Earlier in division one, Skyvalley Rovers edged out Glen Celtic in a seven-goal thriller at Taughmaconnell.
The Glenamaddy side took the lead with eight minutes played thanks to Ryan Mc Hugh. Eoin Keogh levelled the game with a long-range volley.
David Grehan converted a penalty to give Skyvalley Rovers a 2–1 advantage. However, Michael Heneghan had the side’s level at the break when he converted a penalty.
Skyvalley collect victory
Dylan Joyce had the Glenamaddy side 3-2 ahead early in the second-half before Conal Moore equalised. David Grehan scored the winner with 15 minutes remaining.
Skyvalley Rovers held out to take the three points despite being reduced to 10 men for the last 10 minutes. Skyvalley are now third in Division 1 with games in hand on the leaders.
In Division 2, Rahara Rovers beat Moore United “B” 1–0 at the newly developed Clover Park Rahara on Sunday.
The young Moore keeper kept his side in it in the first-half with five great stops. Darren Geraghty was taken down in the Moore penalty area on the hour mark and Paul Flaherty converted the resultant penalty.
A young Moore side defended well for the remainder of the game but could not get an equaliser.
In the Connacht FA Women’s Cup, Ballaghaderreen advance to the second round following a hard earned 3–2 win over Ballisodare at Ballisodare.
Aimie Doory gave the visitors the lead on 11 minutes. Three minutes later the hosts were levelled.
However Grace McDermott had Ballaghaderreen in front again on 23 minutes.
A corner, Mary Carmody after 60 minutes was powerfully headed to the Ballisodare net by Rebecca Finan. While, the hosts pulled a goal back in the closing minutes its Ballaghaderreen who are through to round two.
Castlerea Celtic are also through to round two. They needed extra time to overcome Shiven Rovers at Newbridge.
Rachel Farrell gave Shiven Rovers on 37 minutes. Aoife Smyth equalised through the second-half.
The game went to extra-time with Aoife Smyth and Clodagh Diggins scoring two more in extra-time.
Ballinasloe Town were beaten away by the talented Glenview Stars from Sligo and Swinford advanced to the next round at the expense of Boyle Celtic.
