Gardai in Dublin are investigating the death of a 50-year-old Roscommon businessman who was struck by a stolen car last weekend.
Ian McDonnell, who was formerly from the Galway Road in Roscommon and Elphin, was knocked down after trying to stop his car being stolen on the Robinhood Road in Clondalkin on Sunday evening.
At about 6.15 on Sunday evening, Ian McDonnell was at his business on the Robinhood road in Clondalkin. Ian noticed his car, a grey coloured Volkswagen Passat, was being stolen and he attempted to intervene. However he was struck by the car, and carried on the bonnet for a distance before hitting the ground. He was taken to Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition, but passed away yesterday.
Gardai say the Volkswagen Passat has since been recovered and forensic examinations are ongoing. They're appealing for anyone with information on another vehicle too, a silver Toyota Aura that was stolen on Sunday in Crumlin and was since burned out in Tallaght. Gardai are also anxious to speak to anyone who witnessed the robbery to contact them.
