A Roscommon councillor says the current balance of power in the local authority is not good for democracy. Following the Roscommon County Council AGM in June Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and three Independents make up the majority group. Fianna Fáil's Paschal Fitzmaurice and Larry Brennan were elected as Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach respectively.
The majority group of five Fianna Fáil, four Fine Gael and three Independent councillors voted for both men, with two further Independents abstaining. Independent councillor Tony Ward says the abstension's of Micheál Frain and Valerie Byrne has lead to an unprecedented power imbalance.
