Long-serving Roscommon councillor Michael Mulligan has told Shannonside FM he won't be contesting this year's local elections.

The Sinn Féin councillor says he is stepping away from politics after 20 years on health grounds.

The well-known local businessman was first elected in the Ballaghaderreen area in 2004. He won reelection in the Castlerea Municipal District in 2009 and was reelected in the new Boyle MD in 2014 and again in 2019. Cllr Mulligan courted some controversy in 2022 following comments that Ballaghaderreen had turned into a 'dumping ground' for refugees. He has remained outspoken in recent years in calling for extra supports and services for the town following the arrival of Syrian refugees in 2017.A former Chairperson of Boyle Municipal District, his decision to step down signals the end of two decades' service as a county councillor.
