There are calls for some rural local roads in Co Roscommon not to be reduced to 60 kilometres an hour, in line with national policy. The default limit will drop from 80 to 60 in November, unless special speed limits are adopted by councils. It comes after the government passed legislation to lower the speed limits, in response to the rising number of road deaths. South Roscommon councillor, John Keogh, welcomes the reduction - but believes there should be some exceptions.
Independent councillor Tom Crosby says there should be exceptions in the Boyle Municipal District also.
