A motion put forward to erect a sculpture near the site of a historic archaeological find at Ranelagh on the N61 in Roscommon is to be discussed further after debate the issue at the monthly meeting of the local authority this week.
The motion put forward by Councillors Orla Leyden, Kathleen Shanagher, Marty Mc Dermot, and Valerie Byrne asked that the council erect a suitable piece to mark the discovery of a medieval burial site and ringforts at Ranelagh.
The discovery of the site was made during roadworks on the N61 in 2017 and it's understood that some of those found buried there dated back to the Viking period in Ireland.
While the council has expressed concern about the implications for road traffic safety on the N61 Councillor Orla Leyden says the issue will now be discussed at the council committee which deals with tourism and culture.
