Plans to develop vacant land in Monksland by Roscommon County Council could take between five and ten years.
The local authority announced on Monday afternoon that it is now the owner of the 20 acre site which was once earmarked for a major housing development.
However, that never happened and the 'Parkway' site off the Tuam Road has been derelict for over a decade.
Council Chief Executive Eugene Cummins confirmed on Monday the Council was now the owner of the site where the land is zoned for residential and recreational purposes.
Local Councillor John Naughten feels the land will be vital for the further expansion of services in the growing Monksland community.
