Roscommon County Council has confirmed that it has purchased over twenty acres of land just outside Athlone.
Council CE Eugene Deering told the December meeting of the local authority that the Council had secured the 21.5 acres at Parkway.
He explained the Council had beaten one other bidder to the land and it is a very important and strategic piece of land.
The area has been vacant for over a decade and concerns had been raised previously about anti-social activity at the site.
It’s understood that just over half of the site is zoned for housing while up to eight acres is zoned for recreational amenities.
The Council Chief also confirmed the local authority has purchased a derelict site on Main Street Elphin.
