The Transport Manager of Longford-based haulage firm says the road was impassable in places this morning.

Roscommon County Council says it did treat an ice-affected road in the county following criticism from local motorists. The N5 Ballaghaderreen by-pass was impassable in places this morning following overnight ice and frost. The Transport Manager of Longford-based haulage firm Hall Transport Ltd says the road was closed for a period.

Speaking to Shannonside News, Gearoid Gilheany said the conditions were extremely hazardous for drivers:

Gearoid says it's crucial main routes in the region are kept clear as temperatures plummet this month:

In a statement to Shannonside News, however, the local authority said crews had been deployed twice in the past twenty-four hours. It said one crew carried out salting yesterday afternoon and was redeployed to the N5 earlier this morning as per its Winter Maintenance Programme. The Council says it's investigating the circumstances as to why a stretch of the road subsequently became icy. Crews, it added, are monitoring all roads and responding to any issues as they arise.
