A Roscommon Education Coordinator says there's a positive impact on a person's mental health and employment opportunities when literacy barriers are eliminated.
Bernadette Smith’s remarks follow the announcement of a €1 million literacy strategy by Minister Simon Harris this week.
The strategy aims to address unmet literacy, numeracy and digital literacy needs for people across Ireland.
Bernadette Smith says training boards such as Roscommon ETB have been expanding their literacy services to keep up with the demand:
"The ETB works tirelessly with the literacy services. They've expanded their services, they've hired more tutors, they've gone out into the community to teach and the new part of this fund is the collaboration because it spreads the word wider for the ETB. It spreads the word out to the whole 2 counties and the whole of the country".
