A Roscommon Family Carers official is calling on GP's to provide strong medical support when they're asked to complete a form relating to the Carers Support Grant.
The grant is worth almost €2,000 each year and it is paid to all carers providing full time care, regardless of their means or social insurance contributions.
While almost four and a half thousand carers in the Shannonside Region got the grant this year, Bernie Dowling form Roscommon Family Carers Support Group says many people are still missing out on the payment.
She says one of the reasons people don't qualify is when the medical evidence supporting the claim is not strong enough.
Speaking on the Lets Talk show today, Bernie is appealing to GP's to take the time to fill the form properly if they believe it's merited…
"I call out to doctors today that if somebody asks you to fill out a Carers Support Grant, please give strong medical evidence that the care is required and needed. I can't emphasise enough, please, doctors, I'm begging you, please give a strong evidence and maybe a supporting letter when somebody comes in and asks you to fill out that form because its you that determines whether that person gets the grant or not".
