A young Roscommon farmer is among others marching to Dublin today to highlight concerns over the future of rural Ireland.
Members of Macra na Feirme have been taking part in a 14-hour overnight walk from Kildare to Leinster House, which began yesterday evening. The organisation is calling for more supports for young farmers as well as better access to housing, healthcare and public transport in rural areas.
Knockcroghery native Diarmaid Murray is one of those taking part in the Steps for our Future protest.Speaking to Shannonside FM News the Roscommon man says he feels the way Government views family farms must be addressed.
'The family farm being branded as average and typical by the Minister, we feel that doesn't represent young farmers, it restricts young farmers , young farmers need to be ambitious , they need to invest in their future. We have a letter to hand to the Taoiseach, to the Tanaiste, and to the Minister for Agriculture. We're hoping that we can meet them and we can put our issues in front of them.'
