Roscommon Fire Service say a working smoke alarm saved the life a woman in Castlerea over the weekend.
Emergency services attended the scene of a house fire in Harristown shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, which saw the occupant of the property hospitalised.
The local fire crew are now urging homeowners to ensure their smoke detectors are fully operational and that all fire hazards are taken into account.
Senator Eugene Murphy has called for the re-establishment of a Castlerea fire station and says he will work with councillors and locals to find a solution.
Meanwhile local councillor Pascal Fitzmaurice expressed his sadness and condolences to the family.
"Unfortunately the house was totally destroyed in that fire, which is a very sad thing and I give my condolences to the family. It's a terrible thing to see your family home, which is over 100 year old, burned to the ground".
