The statement follows concerns raised at a local authority meeting in February of this year.

The Roscommon GAA County Board has said it's going to correct the crest currently in use for the organisation on a phased basis.

The statement follows concerns raised at a local authority meeting in February of this year when a joint motion from Councillors Tony Waldron and Liam Callaghan expressed concern that the correct breed of sheep may not be featured on the county crest.

While it was later accepted that the local authority crest does feature the right sheep, the issue was also raised with the local GAA board due to the fact that a black headed sheep is portrayed on its crest.

The Roscommon sheep, which is just one of two native breeds in Ireland, has a white face.

The GAA statement says they're currently seeking advice on the most effective course of action to take with regards to amending the crest.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning Sandra Coote from the Roscommon Sheep Breeders Association says it's important to promote the breed properly and they're happy to see the GAA will play its part

"The county is famed for the Roscommon Sheep and they're still strongly in existence. We re-established the Roscommon Sheep Breeders Association after a lapse of 100 years last year. We now have 10 breeders of the sheep and we're looking for as much support as we can within the county to haev the sheep correctly displayed and to have the correct sheep on any logos or crests that are used".
