A senior Roscommon Garda says officers are focusing on trying to reduce burglaries and break-ins following a number of recent incidents at homes in the south of the county.
Investigations are ongoing into a number of burglaries reported in the last six weeks, with Superintendent Fran Nicholson admitting that Gardai would prefer to reduce or prevent incidents rather than playing catch up in trying to solve crimes.
His comments came at the latest meeting of the county's Joint Policing Committee held earlier this week.
Crime figures outlined by the Roscommon Superintendent at the meeting reveal property and theft crimes are overall fewer than reported last year - with thefts from shops down 38%.
Public order offences are up slightly, but assaults and criminal damage are also reduced from the crime figures recorded last year.
The garda chief also noted that there was a bigger focus on drugs detections in recent months - with three significant seizures in the county- including cash and drugs seized earlier this month.
