A Roscommon GP says the HSE needs to respond urgently to the fact that 41% of all doctors practising medicine in this country are female.
Dr Madeline Ni Dhalaigh who's based in Castlerea was speaking ahead of a national conference tomorrow organised by the Irish Medical Organisation, about gender equality in medicine.
Dr Ni Dhalaigh who'll be chairing one of the events at the conference says the HSE has failed to react to the changes which have taken place in the sector over the past 30 years.
She says working conditions, training and further education are all still predicated on the significant male majority that once existed.
Speaking on the Lets Talk show this afternoon, Dr Ni Dhalaigh said female doctors , like everyone else, have childcare issues, and caring commitments, and they need that be to recognised and supported by their employers.
