A HIQA inspection of Roscommon hospital carried out in March of this year has shown the hospital to be Substantially Compliant or Complaint in the majority of areas inspected.
The unannounced inspection took place on March 2nd, and inspectors concentrated on areas such as infection prevention and control, medication safety, the deteriorating patients, and transitions of care.
The inspection team visited So Coman's medical ward,, the injury unit, and the medical assessment unit during their assessment.
They spoke with people who used the service as well as to management and staff at the hospital.
During the visit to St Coman's Ward inspectors say that over all patients were complimentary about the staff and the care they had received, commenting that "nurses are very attentive" , "treatment is first class" and that they "couldn't praise staff enough".
Patients experiences recounted on the day of inspection were consistent with the hospitals overall finding from the 2022 National Inpatients Experience Survey, which showed 92% of people satisfied with their care, compare dot the national average of 81%.
Under the heading of Person -Centred Care and Support, Roscommon hospital was found to be substantially compliant or complaint with just one partially compliant mark in the service user complaints process.
The hospital also got a partially compliant mark under Care and Support when it came to the physical environment of the hospital, with inspectors noting that the design of the physical environment on St Coman's ward didn't fully protect the dignity and privacy of patients there, particularly with regard to toilet and shower facilities.
With regard to infection control, the deteriorating patients and medication safety the HIQA inspectors found that Roscommon hospital had systems in place to identify and manage potential risks of harm associated with the issues.
