Roscommon IFA Chairman Jim O' Connor says the nothing less than financial support will help farmers with the huge increase in fertiliser costs this year.
Prices of the product have increased by between 2 and 300% in the last year with record natural gas prices as the main driver.
Jim O' Connor says fertiliser plays a huge role in every farmers cost output and there will be major repercussions in terms of employment and food exports in the next year if the government doesn't intercede now.
The Roscommon Chairman was one of the attendants at the AGM meeting in Dublin today where the Taoiseach and Minister for Agriculture addressed delegates.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show this afternoon, Jim O' Connor says if farmers aren't able to buy enough fertiliser this year it will have a definite ripple effect into the wider economy.
