A west Roscommon man has been jailed for 13 months for punching his neighbour in the eye while holding a set of keys.
Christopher McLoughlin, or Riverside, Castlerea, was convicted by a jury of assault at a sitting of Roscommon Circuit Court last October.
The jury heard that an incident occurred following a house party at the accused's apartment in December 2017.
At approximately 4am, following an altercation between McLoughlin and another man at the party, the woman, who was a neighbour of the accused's, was hit in the face by a punch from the 37-year-old, who was holding a set of keys at the time.
The woman suffered a cut to her eyebrow which required three stitches, and Mr McLoughlin pleaded not guilty at his trial last October but was convicted after two hours of deliberations by the jury.
At his sentence hearing this week, Judge Francis Comerford heard that McLoughlin is a long time carer for his partner who has number of medical issues.
The court also heard that he had a number of previous conviction, including for manslaughter following a 2003 incident in Ballinalsoe when Danny O'Neill was fatally stabbed at Hymany park and for which he was jailed for 12 years.
Judge Comerford imposed a 13 month sentence for this offence- telling McLoughlin that there was little mitigation he could use with none of the sentence suspended.]
