Comments made by the Taoiseach describing Sinn Fein as 'Slow Learners' have been condemned by a Roscommon Mother.
Speaking earlier this week, Leo Varadkar responded to questions on a possible Fine Gael/Sinn Fein coalition, describing the opposition's policies as politics for slow learners.
Local woman Monica Leydon, who has a son with a severe disability and learning difficulty, believes the language is damaging to those living with disabilities.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Monica condemned the Taoiseach for what she says is a childish pop at an opposition party.
While she believes Leo Varadkar may not have meant to refer to those with learning difficulties, she says he should understand the damage this language can do:
'For the leader of our country to use such a word as a childish rant towards Sinn Fein is simply not acceptable.
Those in the disability sector and many of those who are non-verbal, we have to be their voice and we have to stand up and defend them.
At the end of the day you have to speak out and you have to challenge things like this that are said.
Their lives are difficult enough day in, day out without the person who's supposed to be the leader of your country publicly coming out and using this as a pop against a political party.'
