A Roscommon native has been appointed as the new vice president of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation.
Carmel Browne was elected at the INTO conference which took place at the INEC in Killarney this week.
The local teacher has represented Longford, Westmeath, Offaly, Kildare and Meath on the INTO Central Executive Committee since 2015.
Speaking to Shannonside FM following her appointment Carmel said she will strive to deliver salary increases and improved conditions of employment for teachers in the north and south.
She also hopes for more equality and inclusion.
I am absolutely thrilled first and foremost to be a Roscommon representative and I think it is probably one of the first ever to be the first vice president of the Irish National Teacher organization. I am looking forward in representing the Longford branch. Equality has always been at the core of everything I have done and so I am looking forward to more diversity and inclusion both in our schools and in our community.
