Householders in Roscommon are being encouraged to bring their bulky waste goods to a special collection at Ballaghaderreen Civic Amenity Site next week.
The collection at Ballaghaderreen next Wednesday, and at the Roscommon Civic Amenity Site the following week are part of a series being organised by the local authority in an effort to reduce illegal dumping.
Householders are encouraged to bring furniture like couches and armchairs, carpets, and hard plastic outdoor equipment to the collections where they can be disposed of properly.
Environment Awareness Officer with Roscommon Council Johnathon Jones says mattresses will also be accepted at the collections, and these will be recycled by specialist companies.
''Last year we ran these bulky good collections as part of our anti dumping initiative and we diverted around 1000 mattresses from landfill. The organisation we work with, those, mattresses were taken apart by hand and the steel spring can be re used in the steel industry and the foam padding can be used in carpets.''
