A Roscommon Senator is calling for a proper school transport system to be put in place in place in the north east of the county for pupils attending Scoil Mhuire in Strokestown.
Senator Eugene Murphy raised the issue in the Seanad today calling on the Minister to make a statement on the provision of school transport in the area.
The Fianna Fail representative says he believes as many as 100 pupils living in the Rooskey and Tarmonbarry areas may be effected.
Senator Murphy says while the pupils live nearer to other schools, the present system doesn't provide any proper support for them to attend other nearby facilities that have places available…
'You will know from old the system of school transport that it is all about the school catchment area so the school catchment area for the Tarmonbarry region is Longford. And all of the schools are full. The school catchment area for the Rooskey area is Mohill and the school in Mohill is full. And you will find that most of these students are going to Scoil Mhuire in Strokestown so basically the people down there are looking for the department to put in place a full school transport system.'
