Roscommon SPCA are urging pet owners not to take drastic action when it comes to unwanted animals.
The local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals made the call following reports of the discovery of remains of puppies in a bag at Shannonbridge in Roscommon.
According to the RSPCA, the bag was discovered by a member of the public, with the remains thought to be there for some time.
Roscommon SPCA Co-coordinator Brigit Banham says the discovery has been a slap in the face to local volunteers.
Speaking to Shannonside FM News, she's urged people to people to reach out and contact a local animal charity instead of taking drastic action.
'We're here purely to help everybody, I think everybody on our team that saw that post yesterday was absolutely heartbroken and distraught.
I would plead with anybody who finds themselves with little puppies they cant cope with , kittens that they can't cope with, please don't go down that route.
Please ring Roscommon SPCA and no matter how full we are , we will bend over backwards to try and help.'
