A Roscommon school specialising in the education of children with special needs has been included in a government plan to expand classroom capacity.
St. Michael's Special School in Castlerea caters for students aged between 4 and 18 years who have an intellectual disability.
The school offers a primary and second level curriculum to students with autism, moderate or Severe Learning difficulties along with other conditions.
The scheme from the Department of Education is designed to fast track the development of additional capacity at special schools for the upcoming 2023/24 school year.
Scoil Mícheal Naofa will see two new classrooms and associated works developed at their Castlerea Campus.
Also included in the region is St Teresa's Special School in Ballinasloe who are to get two new classrooms with further temporary class space being developed in the interim.
11 schools across the country are part of the programme that will see up to 20 new classrooms developed.
The creation of two new special schools have also been announced today by Minister for Education Norma Foley for Cork and Dublin.
