A Roscommon student has won a prestigious Seamus Heaney Poetry Aloud Award.
Castlerea Community School student Sarah Joyce won the Intermediate category of the national competition.
Students are encouraged to recite poetry by memory in this competition sponsored by the late Seamus Heaney.
Sarah Joyce spoke to Shannonside FM about her new experience reciting poetry:
A poem is not something to over-complicate, and I think a lot of students fear poetry, but I don't, I think it's very powerful, and poets write about issues that are important to them and competing in poetry aloud over the years has helped me to find ways of navigating a poem. It's a beautiful experience because for those few moments you say the poem, you give a voice to the poet"
