A Roscommon TD says the Sustainable Energy Authority must review its pre-assessment policy if people are not to be discouraged from applying for grants to make their homes more energy efficient.
The Independent TD raised the issue in the Dail this week when he said that a pre-assessment he had carried out for his own home had shown one cost, but between August and November last year the price quoted by an SEAI-approved one-stop-shop contractor had risen by 53%.
The TD says the pre-assessment is mandatory for anyone applying for a grant , and it costs €750.
He says if the costs quoted as part of that assessment bear no resemblance to the final quote then it is of no use whatsoever.
'There is clearly a failure on the part of the sustainable energy authority of Ireland to be monitored the delivery of the home energy assessment.
They are the ones that are legally requiring you to carry out this assessment and your prices should then be based on that assessment if it is accurate.
If it is not then the sustainable energy authority of Ireland need to get their act together in terms of how they are carrying out these assessment.
You shouldn't be asked to pay for an assessment that is not worth the paper it is written.'
