A Roscommon business has been issued with a closure order by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. D Candy on Main Street in the town was one of 21 closure orders issued by the FSAI in April, a record number for the organisation. The business, run by Sikander Hayat, was issued with the order on the 19th of April due to a number of issues on site. Inspectors found inadequate procedures for controlling pests on site and evidence of rodent infestation in all four store rooms.
The walls of the business were found to be in a poor state of structural repair with extensive dampness, mold growth and flaking paint noted. Extensive water damage was also observed under one sink unit with the wooden frame of the sink rotten. Food products were found stored in open cardboard boxes on a dirty concrete floor and issues were identified around the lack of handwashing facilities in the food prep room. Inspectors found a build up of old, obsolete items such a signage, wooden boards, light fittings and televisions in food storage rooms which prevented effective cleaning and provided a harbour for pests. A lack of ventilation was also noted in any of the storage rooms.
