Kieran Mulvey, from Roscommon town, is set to become the chairperson of An Post.
His appointment as the chairperson designate has been confirmed by Communications Minister Eamon Ryan, following an open competition.
He was a highly regarded mediator with the Workplace Relations Commission, where he served as director-general.
It comes as controversy continues over An Post's decision to move Roscommon post office from a historic building on The Square, to another premises in the town.
Fianna Fáil senator Eugene Murphy, while welcoming his appointment, says he wants to raise the issue with him.
