Dr Gerald Barry believes that widespread testing and tracing is required following the easing of restrictions last month.
At present, some members of the public are travelling over an hour to their nearest testing centre.
The Roscommon native would like to see better public health measures put in place to stop the spread of the virus.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show, the assistant professor of virology at UCD, says people are more likely to get tested if it is convenient and easy.
