The former Independent TD made an emotional address at tonight's selection convention to fill his late brother John's seat on Roscommon County Council.

Former Government Minister Denis Naughten has confirmed he's rejoined the Fine Gael party.

The former Independent TD made an emotional address at tonight's selection convention to fill his late brother John's seat on Roscommon County Council.

Proposing Moore woman Valerie Duffy, he said his brother's efforts to unite the party locally inspired him to rejoin last year.

He said it was his brother's wish that Valerie Duffy continue his legacy in South Roscommon.

Denis left the party after he refused to back the closure of Roscommon's A&E in 2011, and served as an Independent until the last general election last November, when he quit elected politics.

He was a Fine Gael TD between 1997 and 2011.

Denis explained the reasons behind his decision at the convention, where he first spoke about his brother, John:
