Repairs to the Sacred Heart Church in Roscommon Town are likely to cost in the region of €100,000.
The news follows an engineer's report on the condition of the building after a firm was engaged by the parish to carry out a detailed survey.
The firm identified and costed a range of works deemed essential in terms of safety and preventing further damage to the church building.
The project will include remedial works to slating and lead valleys, replacement of bell supports, remedial works to the pinnacles of the church, and to the boiler house chimney.
The Sacred heart Church was first consecrated on the 18th of June 1903 and it will celebrate its 120th anniversary next summer.
Chairman of the Sacred heart Restoration Committee Michael Connaugthon says they hope to have the works carried out by the end of next year.
''It really will be a case of we find out as we go that we will have a fair idea but we would hope that that work will be completed by summer because from a health and safety point of view it would be the most ideal time to be working on the roof of the church.''
