It's been confirmed safety works along the R362 at Cloonakilla National School will commence later this month.
Safety concerns had been raised about the stretch of road particularly at school drop off and collection times.
In late 2022, a scheme was approved and works are expected to start once the school closes for summer holidays in late June.
They include a new roundabout, a pedestrian crossing as well as the upgrading of footpaths
Councillor John Naughten hopes it will make a significant difference to traffic flow and the safety.
"It's one of the biggest national schools in Co.Roscommon with almost 400 pupils in the school and there was an ongoing issue there with traffic congestion, traffic flow, and in fairness to Roscommon County Council, they acknowledged the safety issues there and went about addressing it. Hopefully these measures will be complete by September and will see a significant improvement in safety and also a reduction in the speed".
