The Chief Executive of the Saolta Hospital Group says he's deeply concerned about the health service's capacity to cope with what lies ahead.
Tony Canavan's comments come as concerns have been raised about the increase in rate of incidence levels in multiple counties, as well as in Dublin.
He was addressing members at the Regional Health Forum West when he said that hospital avoidance measures and hospital discharge measures are going to be even more important this winter than they already had been in the past.
He said a significant plan has been prepared jointly by both the hospital groups and the community healthcare organisations but it's still going to be a very difficult winter.
