Adults are also being warned not to exceed 40 minutes of screen time in one go.

Parents in the Shannonside region are being warned that extended screen time can result in a higher risk of shortsightedness in children.

That's according to the President of Optometrist Association of Ireland and Roscommon businessman John Wheldon who says the issue can have long-term
effects on people's lives.

Certain professions such as the Gardaí­, Defense forces or professional drivers will not accept people with a certain level of shortsightedness.

According to studies older a child gets, the less impactful screens are on their development, with adults also advised not to maintain screen time over 40 to 50 minutes at a time.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, The Roscommon Optometrist says the condition can lead to more serious sight disorders in some cases:
