The Seanad has heard calls for more Gardaí in Ballaghaderreen after a woman was mugged at the weekend. Fine Gael senator Gareth Scahill says the wider region had a serious problem with rural crime six months ago.
He says it has lessened since then but has left many people living in fear. The Castlerea man says he's very concerned about a woman being targeted in west Roscommon recently:
Meanwhile, Longford senator Joe Flaherty says many vulnerable people still have no access to their panic alarms after Storm Eowyn.
He says it's because 3,500 people still haven't had their phone or broadband coverage restored. He told the Seanad they feel more fearful of crime as a result:
